Inkilltambo Trek is a lesser known full day trek from Cusco city. The archaeological site nestles near Sacsayhuaman in Cusco. On this full day Inkilltambo trek, we will be hiking through San Blas neighbourhood to the temple of the moon, monkey temple and Inkilltambo complex.
The term “Inkilltambo” in Quechua signifies “Prison of Incas”. However, the site was not a prison but was instead a place for resting while the Incan messengers travelled through Qhapaq Ñan or Inca Trail of the Inca empire.
The complex was built during the rule of the eighth Inca emperor, Viracocha. When he gave the throne of Cusco to his son Pachacutec and took asylum in Huchuy Qosqo.
Just like Machu Picchu and Choquequirao, Inkilltambo also was expanded by Pachacutec. After the Spanish conquest, the complex was abandoned. It was just in a recent excavation the archaeologists found the place and did restoration.

Cusco Hotel Transfer

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 0800 AM. Then in our private transport, we will drive you to the temple of monkeys of Kusilluchayoc. Our local expert will be give you a guided tour of this place.
We will then continue the Inkilltambo trek to Amaru Marcahuasi or the Moon Temple. From the top of the rock you will get a panoramic view of the countryside of Cusco. We will then hike through some Eucalyptus plantations to Inkilltambo.
At Inkilltambo archaeological complex, we will begin the tour by exploring the first half of the complex. We will then stop for our box lunch. After lunch, we will give you a guided tour of the other half of the complex.
We will then hike to the Kallachaka bridge. Here you will be able to see the remains of the colonial ovens.
After the tour, we will be hiking back to Cusco City. We will be ending the tour at Cusco’s main square – Plaza de Armas at 0500 PM.
We took this trip on a leisure day before travelling to Machu Picchu. It was easier than we expected. Heidi and her team were simply fabulous and did a tremendous work in organising this short trek.
