Waqrapukra Acomayo Cusco or simply Waqrapukara is a lesser known archaeological complex in the south of Cusco. This horn shaped Inca fortress is a hidden treasure snuggled amidst mountain peaks. The full day Waqrapukara trek with a local expert is perfect for those wanting to experience something historic, off the touristic track.
The mountain top horn fortress nestles at 4150 metres above sea level. It houses eight farming terraces. The stairway that leads to the fortress is made entirely of stones.
In a recent excavation the Peruvian archaeologists found a triple jammed door. The Incas used such doors only on sites with a supreme religious power.
Although the full day hike is not as popular as a trip to Rainbow Mountain or Sacred Valley in Peru, you will surely be amazed to discover some astonishing facts about the complex. The trek to the complex starts at 3600 metres above sea level. It is just a 550 metres climb.
You will be hiking along the Apurimac river canyon through a ravine covered with forests. We will also be stopping at some natural formations of rocks and cave paintings.
Waqrapukara Trek is a high altitude experience. We highly recommend you to spend at least two days in Cusco and acclimate before the trek to avoid altitude sickness.

An exceptional tour, this was an off road adventure. The site was completely for us as there were no other travellers. The guide from Heidi travel gave us an in-depth explanation. I totally recommend them.
